Precision Decking Supply & Installation

Built for the South West — engineered to outlast the Devon weather.

The Detail

Devon's coastal climate is the ultimate stress test for outdoor materials. Salt air, high rainfall, wet winters and strong south-westerly winds break down inferior decking within a few years — warping boards, greening surfaces and corroding fixings. Precision Decking installs composite, PVC and timber decking that is specified precisely for this environment, using materials and subframe systems rated for coastal exposure. Every deck we build comes with structural guarantees of up to 15 years, giving you a genuinely long-term outdoor space rather than a maintenance headache.

From compact cottage gardens in Sidmouth to broad elevated platforms overlooking the Exe Estuary, and from single private installations to multi-unit holiday-park developments at Dawlish Warren and Newquay, we handle every scale and complexity. Our surveyors are founding partners — not salespeople — so the advice you get is genuine, and the quote you receive covers everything: boards, subframe, balustrades, skirting and installation.

CHOOSE YOUR BOARD

Material Guide.

Composite (Capped)

Pros

Minimal maintenance, resistant to rot and mould, wide colour range, realistic wood grain texture, 25-year manufacturer warranties on premium products, splinter-free, no annual treating required.

Cons

Higher upfront cost than timber. Can feel slightly warm underfoot in direct sun. Expansion and contraction with temperature must be factored into fixing spacing.

Best For

Coastal Devon homes, holiday-park lodges, modern gardens, anyone wanting a high-quality low-maintenance finish. Our most recommended option for the South West climate.

PVC (Cellular PVC)

Pros

Zero wood content — completely impervious to rot, mould and insect damage. Lightest material option. Ideal for extreme coastal and waterside exposure. Very low maintenance.

Cons

Narrower colour range than composite. Can feel more 'plastic' underfoot. Higher coefficient of thermal expansion than composite, requiring careful fixing detail.

Best For

Marinas, waterside lodges, coastal park homes with maximum salt-air exposure. Anywhere that material longevity in a wet, salty environment is the overriding priority.

Pressure-Treated Softwood

Pros

Lowest initial cost. Natural wood feel and appearance. Can be stained or painted. Readily available, easy to cut and work with on site. FSC-certified options widely available.

Cons

Requires annual maintenance (treating, sanding or painting). Will grey and deteriorate if maintenance is neglected. Less suitable for exposed coastal locations without diligent upkeep.

Best For

Budget-conscious residential projects in sheltered gardens, inland locations, or where the owner is committed to annual maintenance and prefers the traditional timber aesthetic.

Hardwood (Ipe, Iroko, Siberian Larch)

Pros

Exceptional natural durability and density. Ipe and Iroko are Class 1 durability timbers and will last 25+ years with minimal treatment. Stunning natural grain and colour. Premium aesthetic.

Cons

Significantly higher material cost than softwood. Requires specialist cutting tools. Must be sourced from certified sustainable suppliers. Needs periodic oiling (every 2–3 years) to maintain colour.

Best For

High-end residential gardens, architecturally designed outdoor spaces, clients who want a premium natural-wood finish with long-term durability and are prepared for occasional maintenance.

01

Composite vs PVC vs Timber: Which Is Right for You?

Composite decking is our most recommended option for Devon homeowners and holiday-park operators. It is manufactured from a blend of recycled wood fibre and polymer, giving it the warmth and grain texture of timber without the ongoing maintenance burden. Composite boards will not splinter, won't need annual treating or sanding, and resist moisture absorption — critical in a county where annual rainfall regularly exceeds 1,000 mm. Board colours range from warm teak and honey oak through to cool greys and charcoal. We work with leading manufacturers whose capped composite range carries a 25-year fade and stain warranty alongside our own up-to-15-year installation guarantee.

PVC (cellular PVC) decking is the most resistant option of all — it contains no wood fibre whatsoever, making it completely impervious to rot, mould and insect damage. It is the material of choice for waterside locations, marinas, and coastal lodge parks where salt-air exposure is most intense. PVC boards are slightly lighter underfoot and available in a narrower colour palette than composite, but for extreme-exposure sites they outperform everything else. Timber decking — principally pressure-treated softwood, hardwood such as Ipe or Iroko, or FSC-certified Siberian larch — remains a popular choice for traditional Devon gardens and those who prefer the authentic look and feel of natural wood. Timber requires annual maintenance (cleaning, treating or oiling) but can be refinished indefinitely and carries a timeless appeal that composite cannot fully replicate.

02

Decking on Slopes, Uneven Ground and Elevated Sites

Devon's topography — rolling hills, coastal cliffs, steeply terraced gardens — means that most of our residential projects involve some degree of slope management. We design and engineer the subframe for every deck from first principles, calculating joist spans, post depths and bearer sizes for the specific ground conditions on your site. Raised decks on sloping sites are tied into concrete pad footings or ground-screw anchors (which cause less ground disruption than poured concrete and can be installed without excavation machinery on tight-access plots). Tiered decks with step runs and integrated staircases are a Precision Decking speciality, turning an awkward slope into a multi-level outdoor living space.

Where ground conditions are complex — made-up ground, clay shrinkage zones, former agricultural land — we recommend a full ground investigation before finalising the subframe specification. We work with local structural engineers for elevated or heavily loaded decks, and all our structural work complies with BS 8417 (timber preservation), BS EN 15534 (composite decking performance) and relevant Building Regulations where applicable.

03

Commercial & Holiday-Park Decking

Precision Decking is one of the South West's leading contractors for holiday-park and lodge-development decking. We understand that park operators need uniformity, speed of installation, durability and minimal guest-facing maintenance — requirements that are different from a private residential project. We have completed multi-unit programmes at parks across Devon and Cornwall, delivering identical deck specifications across 20, 30 and 40-unit developments while maintaining the fit-and-finish quality that parks need to justify premium nightly rates.

Commercial projects benefit from our volume purchasing relationships with material suppliers, which translates into competitive pricing without compromising specification. We manage programme scheduling around park season dates, minimising disruption to bookings, and our project coordinator keeps park management updated throughout. Decking for static holiday homes, touring pitches, communal areas, reception buildings and activity areas all fall within our commercial service.

04

Glass Balustrades, Skirting and Finishing Details

A deck is only as good as its details. Glass balustrade systems — either frameless toughened-glass panels or aluminium-framed with toughened glass infill — are increasingly popular across Devon's coastal and estuary properties because they preserve the view while meeting Building Regulations Part K safety requirements. We supply and install frameless and semi-framed systems in stainless steel and powder-coated aluminium, and we calculate post spacing and glass thickness based on deck height and exposure to wind loading. Timber and aluminium balustrade options are available where a softer aesthetic is preferred.

Skirting panels around the underside of a raised deck prevent access by animals and windblown debris, and dramatically improve the finished appearance. We fabricate matching skirting in composite or PVC board material so the deck presents as a single cohesive structure from all angles. Integrated LED deck lighting, hidden drainage channels and stainless-steel hidden fixings are available as standard upgrades on any installation.

THE BENEFITS

Why Choose Precision.

Up to 15-Year Installation Guarantee

Every deck we build carries a structural installation guarantee of up to 15 years. The material manufacturer's own warranty — up to 25 years on capped composite — runs in addition to this, giving you comprehensive long-term protection.

Coastal-Climate Specification

All materials, fixings and subframe components we use are specified for South West England's salt-air, high-rainfall coastal conditions. We do not use standard inland specifications for coastal sites.

Slope & Complex-Ground Expertise

Sloping gardens, uneven ground, clay soils and waterside sites are our speciality. We engineer every subframe for the specific conditions on your plot — no one-size-fits-all solutions.

Zero-Surprise Quoting

Our quotes cover boards, subframe, fixings, balustrades, skirting and installation labour in full. There are no 'extras' revealed after you sign — what you're quoted is what you pay.

Commercial Scale Capability

From a single garden deck to a 40-unit holiday-park programme, our project management and material procurement can handle any scale without compromising on quality or delivery schedule.
